Best Questions to Ask when Selecting a Roofing Company

While many homeowners like to save money by tackling projects themselves, there are some tasks such as roofing which are generally left to the professionals. Roofing is not only risky, but when dealing with insurance claims for roof replacement, you’re much better off leaving the process in the hands of a company that is experienced in handling claims, and has their own required insurance should there be any issues that arise during the process.

But how do you know which roofing company is your best choice? Asking every roofing company highly important questions can help you find out. We asked the roofing experts at Cavalry Roofing which questions are the most important for potential customers, and here’s what they recommended:

How long have you been in business?

Businesses that do not provide high-quality service tend not to remain in business for a long time. However, companies that have been able to thrive for several years show they have a track record of happy customers. Ask the company how long they have been in business, and also see if they have any customer reviews that date back to when they started.

Is your company experienced in handling insurance claims?

It is a crucial question to ask before selecting the right roofing company for your roofing project. Usually, a policy deals with problems caused by a storm, fire, hail, or weight of unexpected or accidental snow. So ask the roofing company if they are experienced in dealing with insurance claims and the whole procedure.

What insurance coverage do you have in case you cause any damage?

Roofing insurance may become difficult because certain states can require different insurance levels depending on what type of contractor you hire. When you ask this question, if a roofer hesitates over the phone, it’s a red flag, but they might not lie. If so, you don’t have to rule them out completely. Only request them to email you a copy of their agreement on insurance liability. At the very least, the company would have workers’ compensation and general liability.

Is your company licensed properly?

This is the most critical question that a roofing company has to answer. Aside from carrying adequate liability insurance, a roofing contractor must be certified, and their company must be licensed to operate in the state where your home is located.

What are the best materials for my home or business?

Different climates require different materials for the roofing. A roofing company should answer what the right materials for the area in which you live are. They must also be able to provide you with a side-by-side analysis of the various materials to decide which the right choice is for you and your budget.

How much time will the project take?

Roofing work must be done in a timely manner. If the company is not swift at working, then there could be damage to some roofing materials in the process, plus rain could become a factor. The installation can take 1 to 3 days or more for larger buildings anywhere, depending on the roof’s size.

How long is the roof expected to last?

Depending on the roofing material, new roofs will last anywhere from 25 to 50 years. The roofing company you select should be able to give you an assurance that the roof will last for at least 25 years. Asking this question lets you know how responsible the roofing business is.

Would you be able to remove my old roof?

A few companies can offer to add shingles to the second layer instead of a complete replacement. Although this is legal in many states, not removing roofing material may cause problems down the road. It could negate those promises and add too much weight to the house.
